Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
An 18-year-old youth, Debjyoti Mandal, tragically lost his life after a part of a three-storey building collapsed in Baguiati. The incident occurred on Thursday night, and his body was pulled out of the debris eight hours later on Friday morning. Rescue operations were carried out overnight by police and firefighters. Despite the efforts, Debjyoti was declared dead upon arrival at RG Kar Hospital.
Debjyoti, who resided in the Najrul Park area of Baguiati, was inside the building when a part of it suddenly collapsed. Other occupants managed to escape, but Debjyoti was trapped as the ceiling of the third floor fell onto the second floor, which in turn collapsed onto the first floor where he was sitting on a bed.
Police and fire brigade teams reached the scene promptly and began rescue operations, which were hindered by continuous rain. After eight hours of arduous effort, Debjyoti was retrieved from the debris around 5 a.m. on Friday and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Heavy rains, as forecasted by the weather department, have impacted Kolkata and surrounding areas, and locals believe the continuous downpour led to the building's collapse. The police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination, and investigations into the exact cause of the collapse are ongoing.
